Jail is not a mental health treatment facility!
Individuals who engage in criminal behavior between the ages of 18 and 26–may have naturally aged out of criminal behavior if they had accessed the proper mental health and living environment.
The Transformative justice HLP breaks the cycles of violence by addressing the root cause of crime and lack of mental health care and by advocating for the reallocation of resources towards mental health and social support.
The Transformative Justice Living Community’s vision is to address a root cause of criminal behavior leading to incarceration and homelessness by developing a well-designed, self-sustaining community that offers long-term holistic mental health care and residential living that reduces violence and promotes long-lasting change and success.
Compassion and respect for those that may appear the least deserving can be more fiscally sound than the dehumanization and punishment that happens in the prison.
Research shows that these living environments are the best way to reduce criminal behavior (Delancey Street Foundation.)
Individuals who engage in criminal behavior between the ages of 12-26–who are entering the adult justice system–might have naturally stopped once they reached 26 and their brains stop developing. However, laws like the three-strike-your-out laws that kept youth and emerging adults up for a long time may make the problem of violence worse. Investing in long-term, evidence-based mental health treatment and services keeps young people out of the system, in school, and connected to their families. We can create meaningful and lasting change by addressing one of the root causes of criminal behavior: lack of specialized mental health care.
