The Healthy Lifestyles Program is a welcoming and safe place for individuals of 12 – 26 years of age to explore their mental health and how it is related to their risk of being involved in the criminal justice system.
The program targets individuals at high risk of justice involvement, particularly those aged 12-26.
The program is built on three core principles: Healing, a Trauma-Informed Approach, and Cultures of Support. These principles aim to create supportive communities, redefine accountability, and address a root cause of criminal behavior: a lack of specialized mental health care for people at high risk of violent criminal behavior.
The program offers a comprehensive mental evaluation, weekly individual therapy sessions, group therapy sessions, medication management, and neurofeedback, among other services.
HLP treats criminal behavior as a psychological and behavioral issue, targeting mental health and prosocial identity development as key factors in rehabilitation and societal reintegration.
The TJHLP fills a gap in the community by providing long-term specialized mental health care delivered by doctoral forensic psychologists to youth and emerging adults who are at high risk for violent behavior.
Research has shown that youth incarceration can lead to increased criminal behavior, association with delinquent peers, and higher recidivism rates. HLP aims to keep young people out of the justice system by providing evidence-based programs and services.
The program includes healing circles for families, victims, and the community to deal with the impact of crime and provides individuals receiving mental health care at the TJHLP with a CoSA (Circles of Support and Accountability), all focused on developing pros social community identity.
Individuals interested in joining the program or referring a client can schedule an appointment or call the office for more information.
